(Adnkronos) - Il Texas ha fissato per domani l'esecuzione di un uomo condannato a morte 20 anni fa per la morte della figlia di due anni. Ma da allora gli stessi investigatori che accusarono Robert Leslie Roberson di aver ucciso nel 2002 la figlia scuotendola in modo troppo violento, ora sono convinti che a provocare la morte di Nikki furono complicazioni di una polmonite. Â
"Mi sono sbagliato, non ho ascoltato Robert e ora vi posso dire che è un brav'uomo, non ha fatto quello di cui è stato accusato da me e dallo stato del Texas", ha dichiarato a Usa Today Brian Wharton, l'ex poliziotto che guidò le indagini ed ora è pastore metodista. La sua è una delle tante voci che si stanno sollevando in difesa dell'innocenza di Roberson e per chiedere allo stato del Texas un atto di clemenza, in extremis.Â
Tra queste quella del famoso autore di best seller, John Grisham che ha scritto che "la morte di Nikki è stata una tragedia non un crimine. Robert Roberson non ha altre opzioni se le autorità del Texas non riconoscono l'ingiustizia della sua condanna e la condanna a morte, e gli assicurano un nuovo processo". La speranza dello scrittore e degli altri mobilitati per salvare la vita a Roberson, compreso il famoso gruppo Innocence Project, impegnato a difendere i condannati ingiustamente, ora è appesa alla decisione che verrà presa oggi dal Texas Board of Pardon e Parole riguardo alla richiesta di clemenza e di un nuovo processo.
