(Adnkronos) - È morto a 51 anni lo sceneggiatore, regista e produttore Aaron Kaufman dopo un apparente attacco di cuore mentre si trovava a Las Vegas. La notizia della scomparsa è stata confermata a 'Variety' da Chad Verdi, il finanziatore del film 'The Irishman' e di molti progetti passati e futuri di Kaufman.Â
Il regista originario di Long Island, che è stato a lungo partner di Robert Rodriguez nella produzione, è noto soprattutto per aver co-diretto con Sean Penn il documentario 'Superpower' (2023), nominato agli Emmy, che ripercorre l'ascesa politica del presidente ucraino Volodymyr Zelensky. Mentre Penn è diventato il volto del docufilm, è stato Kaufman ad essere sul posto nel febbraio 2022 quando è scoppiata la guerra con la Russia. Kaufman era stato a Kiev nelle settimane precedenti l'invasione russa ed era stato nel bunker con il leader ucraino durante i primi pericolosi giorni del conflitto (Penn sarebbe arrivato più tardi per intervistare Zelensky per il documentario). Con 'Superpower', Kaufman non aveva inizialmente deciso di dirigere un film di guerra: il documentario doveva invece seguire l'insolita traiettoria di Zelensky, da comico popolare a personaggio di spicco sulla scena mondiale dopo la vittoria alle elezioni presidenziali in Ucraina nel 2019. Durante la promozione del film al Festival di Berlino del 2023, Kaufman ha dichiarato che 'Superpower' era "un'opportunità per vedere cosa fosse questo ragazzo, per seguire un percorso e vedere quale fosse la verità ". Nel 2021 invece Kaufman aveva puntato l'obiettivo sui Testimoni di Geova per l'esplosiva docuserie di Vice Studios 'Crusaders' che ha svelato gli abusi dilaganti nella chiesa (il regista era cresciuto come testimone di Geova).Â
All'inizio della sua carriera il regista newyorkese si era trasferito ad Austin, in Texas dove ha lavorato con Robert Rodriguez, producendo molti dei film di successo del regista di 'Dimension', tra cui 'Sin City - Una donna per cui uccidere', 'Machete' e 'Machete Kills'. Ha anche scritto, diretto e prodotto il thriller del 2016 'Urge', con Pierce Brosnan, distribuito da Lionsgate.Â
Al momento della sua morte, Kaufman aveva in cantiere una serie di progetti, tra cui un documentario che racconta la vita e la carriera pionieristica della leggenda hawaiana Don Ho e altri film ambientati in Ucraina, dove continuava a recarsi. Recentemente Kaufman ha firmato come produttore del documentario 'The Jet', diretto da Jennifer Tiexiera, che segue la vita del famoso kickboxer Benny 'The Jet' Urquidez. Kaufman si è unito ai colleghi produttori John Scalise, Keanu Reeves e Fisher Stevens per la realizzazione del film.Â
